It’s also not just taking it to the vet occasionally.

If your goal is to keep your furry friend in really good health, there are five other things you need to do.

1. Hydration

If you’re away from home a lot, your dog may not be getting all the water it needs. In case you’re wondering how much a dog needs, there’s a simple formula – one ounce per pound of the dog’s body weight. That’s a lot of water – especially if you have a big dog. And if your BFF doesn’t get enough water, it could develop a urinary tract infection. The Drinkwell ® Everflow Indoor/Outdoor Fountain and Drinkwell® Big Dog Fountain you can make sure they are getting the water that they need all day.

2. Proper mental and physical exercise

Your dog may be begging for more exercise – depending on its breed. This is true of even some small dogs like Jack Russell terriers. Dogs need about 30-60 minutes of exercise per day, and this isn’t just running around outside. Plus, they need mental activity to keep them sharp. Try taking your dog on a hike, or find toys that keep it playing and help exercise his mental capacity. Your dog will definitely thank you.

3. Socialization

You need to be able to trust your dog around other dogs. Make sure you socialize it with all different sizes and shapes of dogs and humans so you can trust that it will behave in all situations. Dogs need that social interaction to build healthy relationships with other dogs and humans. A great start is to begin socializing when the dog is 3 to 12 weeks old as its most likely ready for new experiences. But cautious socialization can continue throughout a dog’s life. A great way to help socialize your dog is with a day at the dog park.

4. Grooming and Vet Visits

You can do wonders for your dog’s health with regular visits to the vet. Keeping up with the dog’s grooming will also do good things for his health. Routine visits can even extend your dog’s life, and also decrease their odds that it will need expensive visits, as it grows older. Keep up with when your pet should visit the groomer and their veterinarian!

5.  Love

The number one thing your dog probably needs from you is love. Make sure he or she gets a lot of your live and attention. Keep your relationship with your best friend healthy and your dog will have just what it needs to be healthy all year round!
