Giardia is a common parasite that gets into a dog’s intestines, reproduces and causes diarrhea.
How your pet gets Giardia in dogs
Giardia is typically picked up from feces, contaminated water or exposure to infected animals.
Symptoms of Giardia in dogs
The symptom of giardia in dogs that is most evident is if you see a soft, often greenish and follow-smelling diarrhea. In some cases, the diarrhea may be explosive or even bloody with mucus.
The effect of Giardia in dogs
In some instances, the symptoms of Giardia might persist for several days or weeks. In this case, it can cause malnutrition, weight loss, dehydration, loss of appetite, lethargy and even death.
The conventional or traditional way to treat giardia in dogs is with the drug Flagyl (metronidazole). However, it unfortunately has some serious side effects that can include affecting the dog’s balance and its ability to walk.
Natural cures for Giardia in dogs
There are two herbal formulas that have been used successfully as natural cures for Giardia in dogs. The first is called AP Mag, which includes bitter melon, bael fruit, Chinaberries, berberis and basil leaf. It is available from Ayush Herbs. DGL Plus. It consists of licorice root and unripe plantain. If your dog is showing signs of diarrhea and you believe it’s being caused by Giardia, it’s advised that you start with DGL Plus and AP Mag. DGL Plus should be used for about 2 to 3 weeks to firm up the dog’s stool and call its intestine nine. AP Malik could then be used for two or three months or howsoever long it takes to resolve the problem. If you see that your dog is going through cycles of improvement and then relapse, it is recommended that you strengthen the program with a product called Neems Plus.
DGI Plus: For dogs up to 30 pounds, one capsule twice daily. For dogs between 30 and 60 pounds, two capsules twice daily. For larger dogs, two capsules three times daily.
AP Mag: For dogs up to 30 pounds, one capsule twice daily. If your dog weighs between 30 and 60 pounds, one capsule three times daily. Two capsules twice a day for larger dogs.
Neems Plus: One tablet twice daily for dogs up to 30 pounds and one tablet three times daily for dogs weighing between 30 and 60 pounds. For larger dogs, two tablets twice a day. If you have a very small dog, there is Neems Plus in liquid form.
Other herbal remedies
Another natural way to treat giardia in dogs is with grapefruit seed extract (GSE). It is said by some to be the most effective natural remedy for treating Giardia inbox. The dosage is one capsule per 10 pounds of the dog’s body weight up to 3 to 5 times a day for up to 14 days.
Alternately, you could treat the dog with herbs that contain the active alkaloid constituent berberine. This includes goldenseal and Oregon grape. The berberine acts much like an antibiotic. Tinctures of goldenseal or Oregon grape can be given to the dog twice a day for up to 10 days. Other herbs that may be useful in treating giardia in dogs include licorice and garlic.
